For those who are interested in competing, we offer both competitive and recreational teams. Our philosophy on competing is not just based upon winning a first place or high score. We promote teamwork and good sportsmanship, and believe in keeping rehearsals and costs within reason. We rarely ask our dancers to rehearse on weekends or for long hours outside of class during the week. We look at competition as mainly an opportunity to get on stage and perform. Thus, DPU takes a “middle of the road” approach to competition. We do not feel competing should be about entering the students in so many routines that they all begin to look alike or asking the parents to purchase costume after costume overloaded with rhinestones. Our goal is that our dancers be able to execute a variety of styles proficiently and become true performers who are at ease in front of an audience. Again, those who wish to go on to pursue college scholarships or professional careers are able to do so.

Normally, the teams enter two to three competitions per season and also do community and charity performances. Auditions for teams are held in late spring, early summer.
